Project Brief
The design brief for the alcohol bottle label required the concept to connect to two personal identities. I am an avid baker, and I love baking for family. The concepts that drive the design for my rum bottle are family and baking.
Initial Ideation
Science, Baking, & Family
In some of my initial sketches, I incorporated the chemical equations. Both baking and alcohol involve science, and the chemical equations emphasize this fact. In the end, the equations were simplified to hexagons used throughout the design.
My grandfather, John Ferreter, was a B-17 pilot in WWII. This fact inspired the name of my rum, Winged Ferret. Reviewing 1940s newspapers inspired the typefaces.
The main photo on the front of the label is of John Wolter, my great grandfather circa 1925 who owned a soda pop company called Wolter Bottling Works.
Creative Strategy
Personalized Message
On the side of the label is a removable card prompting the consumer to either replace it with a personal photo or share a family anecdote or recipe if they were to pass this on as a gift. For something like alcohol, especially if it is solely used for baking, it will be in a person's kitchen for a long while; it is important the customer feels connected to the bottle and values it in their kitchen.
Augmented Reality
Finally, part of this project brief was to add an augmented reality component to our label. The goal of this AR component is to incorporate another way for the consumer to interact with the product and brand. Having this aspect even if they only experience it once, creates another memory and experience of the product for the consumer. Building on the theme of family for part of the AR component I colorized the front photo in the label.
